"The Colour of Beauty"

My friend shared this video on facebook today and I find it very inspiring.

"Renee Thompson is trying to make it as a top fashion model in New York. She's got the looks, the walk and the drive. But she’s a black model in a world where white women represent the standard of beauty. Agencies rarely hire black models. And when they do, they want them to look “like white girls dipped in chocolate.”

The Colour of Beauty is a shocking short documentary that examines racism in the fashion industry. Is a black model less attractive to designers, casting directors and consumers? What is the colour of beauty?"

After watching this video, I can't help but think that while black people find it difficult to be hired by modeling agencies, it's even more rare to see an Asian face in the North American media. Once in a while, I see an Asian face on the commercial and I smile a little within.

Let me know what you think.

wow absolutely lovely post. You totally inspired me to make a post about race in the fashion industry, it hope this is okay. I also posted this on my facebook.

Thank you for sharing this with me,

as a designer, I really hope to change some of these issues with race/weight. Everyone is beautiful. Also, consumers do not typically look like those stereotypical model. It is getting tired.

The definition of beauty is getting so screwed up. I have ABSOLUTELY NO white girl features! I know that being white or looking white is ideal but whatever. I'm happy being Asian. It sucks that this sort of racism still exists & even permeates through Fashion.

I agree.. if there's less black girls in Fashion, there's even less Asian girls.

Great video! Thanks for sharing, Edwina <3

Thanks for the video. I agree..it's always refreshing to see a wide representation of women of all races and ethnic background.

omgosh i love this video. So true, the fashion industry needs to open their eyes to the fact that there is not just one beautiful race, all races are beautiful! Thanks for posting it :)
